Oklahoma City Implant Overdentures

Oklahoma City dentist Dr. Michael Forth is uniquely qualified to offer the latest in dental implant technology: implant overdentures. Combining the strength and stability of dental implants with the simplicity of dentures, it is one of the best options for patients who need to replace a large number of missing teeth, but who want to avoid the high cost of replacing teeth with individual implants.

Overdentures versus removable dentures

Diagram of implant overdenture. The main difference between traditional removable dentures and overdentures is that the overdentures are anchored permanently in the patient's jaw. This is most often accomplished by the placement of dental implants at key points, but is sometimes done with the patient's remaining natural teeth, if they are healthy enough. For example, cuspids have the longest root of all of the teeth. If the patient has healthy cuspids on both sides, they can be prepared and then the overdenture placed over them.

When dental implants are used, titanium root forms are inserted into the patient's jawbone by an oral surgeon. As the surgical site heals, the bone of the jaw grows around and bonds with the root form, creating a strong base of support to anchor the overdenture. (See the diagram at right.) In some cases, as few as two implants may be needed to anchor the denture. For added stability, as many as six implants may be used. In addition, a retainer bar can be used to join two implants and provide added support. Dr. Forth will discuss the best options for each individual case.

Overdentures offer many advantages over traditional removable dentures. They will not slip or fall out the way removable dentures can. They will not move when you speak or eat. Because they are anchored in the jaw—instead of just resting on top of it—they are much more stable and provide better biting and chewing support than removable dentures. They prevent facial collapse, a common complication of long-term use of removable dentures.

Overdentures personalized for each patient

Because Dr. Forth has specialized training in ceramic cosmetic dentistry, he can create beautiful, natural-looking overdentures that will look as if they are the patient's own teeth. As part of the patient's overall care, he will discuss their goals for the appearance as well as function of his or her teeth. Even if you are facing the loss of all of your natural teeth, you can still get a healthy, beautiful smile that you will be proud to show off, as well as one that will let you continue the activities you enjoy.
