What is full mouth restoration?
A full mouth restoration is a customized treatment plan aimed at completely rehabilitating the health and appearance of a patient's mouth and bite. More than a "smile makeover," a full mouth restoration addresses the underlying health conditions that have led to the patient's dental problems and aims to restore the patient to optimal function and health. The scope of the restoration will usually include one or more of the following areas:
Repair or replace damaged or missing teeth. Dr. Forth and his team have extensive training and experience with a range of treatments, including:
- porcelain crowns,
- veneers,
- dental bonding,
- dental implants,
- dentures and bridges; and
- implant overdentures.
Address progressive gum disease. Healthy gums provide the foundation for healthy teeth and a healthy mouth.
Diagnosis and treatment of joint or neuromuscular issues affecting the bite or jaw. People who suffer from chronic headaches, problems chewing, or pain when opening or closing the mouth often have undiagnosed problems with the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) or with bruxism (grinding of the teeth). Untreated, these conditions can lead to problems with the bite (see below) as well as deterioration of both the teeth and gums. Dr. Forth has specific training and experience with diagnosing and treating these types of problems. (Learn more about Dr. Forth's qualifications.)
Diagnosis and treatment of occlusal (bite) dysfunction. Patients who have a poorly aligned bite or problems with the muscles and function of the jaw will suffer from a range of health problems, including damage and deterioration of their teeth and gums. Treatments may be as simple as the use of special exercises or wearing of an appliance to correct the bite up to complete re-structuring of the patient's bite, including the use of orthodontics or surgery. Dr. Forth has experience in diagnosing and coordinating the care involved in restoring a patient's bite to proper function.
Emphasis on conservation and restoration
Dr. Forth believes it is almost always in the patient's best interest to keep as many of his or her natural teeth as possible. He will always explore the most conservative treatment options first before recommending total replacement or reconstruction, though these options are sometimes necessary in cases where the patient's teeth are severely damaged and interfering with his or her overall health.
