Cost guidelines for dental implants
The cost of getting dental implants can vary widely from case to case, depending on certain factors. Each case really involves, at a minimum, two separate procedures: the implant surgery and then the crown or overdenture that is placed by the dentist. (Learn more about dental implants.)
The cost for the surgery for a single implant can range from $900 up to around $2,500, depending on the complexity of the case (where the implant needs to be placed, any co-existing health conditions the patient has, etc.). Some patients may need bone grafting or other procedures before they are able to have the root form implanted, and these would be an additional cost.
The dental services involved in placing the crowns or artificial teeth over the implants would range from about $1,000 to $2,500. So, replacing all teeth with individual implants would cost somewhere between $50,000 to $100,000, if there were no other health complications requiring additional procedures (bone grafting, etc.). Some of this expense may be covered by a patient's dental insurance. And, there are financing options available through third-party services.
Advantages of dental implants
Dental implants are, by far, a superior option for replacing missing teeth. They offer distinct health advantages over replacing teeth with removable dentures or partials, or even fixed dental bridges. The artificial "teeth" of dentures and dental bridges only sit on top of the gumline. They are not anchored in the jaw. This presents several problems for most denture and bridge wearers: the denture or bridge does not provide sufficient bite strength and affects chewing ability; and, because there is no tooth root in the jaw, the body begins to resorb the bony tissue, leading to deterioration of structure of the jaw. In advanced cases, this deterioration results in a condition known as facial collapse. Dental implants prevent these problems, resulting in a significantly improved quality of life.
And, if you consider the costs of dental work over time, getting dental implants may be the most cost-effective solution. When a small number of missing teeth are replaced by a dental bridge, the two adjacent teeth must be ground down and have crowns placed in order to support the bridge. If these teeth need their own dental work at a later time, then the bridge must be removed and replaced as well. So, the patient would, essentially, end up paying for the bridge twice and dental work on those adjacent teeth twice as opposed to the cost of the dental implants once.
Likewise, due to deterioration of the jawbone that accompanies long-term denture use, dentures lose their fit over time. Most patients who get dentures to replace all of their teeth will have to have these dentures replaced with new ones as time passes. Dental implants, once placed, will function just like a patient's natural teeth. If cared for properly, they will last a lifetime.
Cost saving options for dental implants
A viable option for many patients who would like dental implants but face difficulty with the costs of individual implants is to use a smaller number of implants to anchor more than one artificial tooth. For example, in some cases as few as two implants can be used to anchor one whole (upper or lower) overdenture. Dr. Forth has extensive experience with dental implants and with whole-mouth restorations and can discuss a range of options to meet different treatment needs.
